Rovio’s SVP of technology and senior Machine Learning engineer introduced Beacon at RovioCon Google 2022 – see the full presentation inside.
In November, Rovio and Google came together to organize RovioCon Google 2022, a top-notch, class A gaming event featuring presentations and panels from some of the mobile game industry’s major voices. At the event, Rovio’s senior Machine Learning engineer Jorge Ramirez and SVP of technology David Mason expanded on how Rovio brings their games to life every day with the Beacon platform and how they use Machine Learning to ensure the best gaming experience is delivered to players.
The platform, aptly named Beacon, provides a guiding light that supports Rovio games throughout their entire lifecycle. It contains tools to help game teams to build games and get games to market, models to profitably grow and monetize the game and live operations tools to maximize our players’ fun.
In the presentation, David explains that everything Beacon does is built around the player. Every player who starts a Rovio game receives a player-tailored game experience served by Beacon. The Beacon LiveOps Calendar is one example of how we bring our games to life every day – enabling game as a service – with in-game seasonal events, daily events, and offers that can be scheduled on-the-fly.
Jorge dives deeper into Machine Learning and talks about how Rovio uses ML to aid gaming experience personalization for players. He illustrates this with an example from Angry Birds Dream Blast. Players may receive in-game help to complete the first level they play each day. Using a model created with ML, it is possible to predict which players will appreciate having this help and which ones will not. According to the model, of the players included in the experiment, those who play more levels, more frequently, do not want the help. Insights like these can help tailor experience for players depending on their skill level and their playing style, resulting in a more personalized and enjoyable experience.
